Botox is the only treatment that temporarily improves the appearance of both moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles in adults. Botox partially paralyzes the muscles responsible for these lines therefore the wrinkles will not be continuously reinforced by underlying muscular contraction. With time, the wrinkles fade and you obtain a more youthful appearance. It is also recommended for the prevention of wrinkles.
Botox is a naturally occurring protein made by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. In 2004 the Italian Ministry of Health approved its use for cosmetic procedures.
This treament targets a variety of facial muscle activities, including:
Lines or wrinkles under the eyes
Vertical lip lines (in conjunction with fillers)
“Bunny” lines on the nose
Downturned mouth corners
Heavy jaw (enlarged masseter muscles)
Low or heavy eyebrows (brow lift)
Chin crunch (unconscious contraction of chin muscles)
Neck bands (platysma)
Botulinum toxin is directly injected into neuromuscular tissue using a thin needle. The physician will ask the patient to contract his or her facial muscles in order to determine which muscles are contribuiting to the formation of the wrinkles. This treatment takes anywhere from 1-3 days to start working and takes approximately 2 weeks until its peak activity. The typical duration of botox is between 4-6 months. The duration of the effect is dependent on the strength of the muscle and the dose injected.
Botox has potential side effects. Each patient needs to review these in detail with their physician and understand potential issues. However the use of botox has been shown to be very safe when injected by experienced hands.
Botulinum toxin should not be used in pregnant or lactating women or by patients who have had a previous allergic reaction to the drug or any of its ingredients.
